Who uses them and for what

Merito Media LLC, owner of SciClue, uses first-party cookies and browser local storage to maintain your session, protect forms, and remember the preferences you choose. In addition, Google Analytics is loaded only if you accept analytics in the consent panel. A cookie is a small piece of data sent to the browser; localStorage and sessionStorage store data on that same device under different rules.

Analytics is optional: you can reject it and continue reading the magazine. You can accept or reject using the panel buttons and change your choice using the “Analytics Cookies” control. We do not load Google Analytics before you accept. This configuration keeps Google signals and advertising personalization disabled; we do not use theme or newsletter preferences to build advertising profiles.

First-party cookies

Name Purpose Duration
sciclue_session Maintain the session, form messages, and account access. This is a technical cookie; it does not contain the password in readable text. 120 minutes of inactivity; renewed when you use the site.
XSRF-TOKEN Protect requests and forms against request forgery. This is a technical cookie. 120 minutes; renewed with the session.
remember_web_* Maintain access when you explicitly request that the session be remembered, for example in the editorial dashboard. The suffix varies. Up to 400 days; may be renewed when you authenticate and is deleted when you log out.
sciclue_newsletter_subscribed Remember in that browser that you have already submitted a subscription and avoid showing the invitation again. It is created when you complete the subscription. It does not replace the subscription record. One year.

The browser may delete cookies sooner. Session and subscription cookies are restricted to HTTPS in production; form protection allows access to XSRF-TOKEN from the website’s own code. Tokens are not used for advertising purposes.

Optional Google Analytics

When you accept, Google Analytics receives technical information about the browser and device, pages visited, and interaction events to produce usage statistics. The _ga and _ga_* cookies distinguish browsers and maintain the state of measurement sessions. In this installation, they are configured to expire after 28 days, renewable when you revisit the site with consent; the browser may limit that period. A cookie’s expiration does not correspond to the period for which the provider retains statistics.

SciClue’s code does not include query parameters in the page address it configures for Analytics. Analytics is not required to access content or subscribe to the newsletter. If you withdraw your authorization using “Analytics Cookies” and choose “Reject,” measurement is disabled and the Analytics cookies that the code can delete on this site are removed. You can complete the deletion in your browser settings. Withdrawal does not automatically erase data already processed.

The service is provided by Google and may involve international processing. You can consult Google Analytics privacy information and the documentation on its cookies. For questions about your data, use the privacy form.

Local and session storage

Key and location Purpose Duration
sciclue-theme in localStorage Remember your choice of light or dark theme. Until you change your choice or clear the site data; it has no automatic expiration.
sciclue.com-analytics-consent in localStorage Save whether you have accepted or rejected optional analytics. Until you change your choice or clear the site data; it has no automatic expiration.
sciclue-newsletter-welcome-dismissed in localStorage Remember that you closed the newsletter invitation. It saves the date it was closed. The preference applies for 30 days. The entry may remain in the browser until it is overwritten or its data is cleared.
The same key in sessionStorage Remember the dismissal during the visit, including when localStorage is unavailable. Until the browser tab or session is closed, depending on how it works.

ALTCHA checks forms using a challenge served by SciClue and resources hosted on the website itself. It does not add advertising cookies or load an external tracking CAPTCHA.

How to control this data

You can choose the theme using the header control and close the newsletter invitation using its close button. In your browser’s privacy settings, you can view, block, or delete the cookies and storage for www.sciclue.com; localStorage and sessionStorage may appear as “site data.” To end an authenticated session, also use the account logout option.

If you block all cookies, access and secure form submission may stop working. Deleting this data resets preferences and may cause the invitation to appear again. Deleting a cookie does not cancel the newsletter: use the unsubscribe link in each email. Likewise, the subscription indicator saved in the browser does not check whether you later unsubscribed.
