Definition and context
Energy helps relate processes that seem different, such as motion, heating, and chemical transformations. Its unit in the International System is the joule. In an explanation, it is useful to specify the system we are studying and how it can exchange energy with its surroundings.
Consider a lamp powered by a battery. To construct a balance, we need to consider the energy leaving the battery and where it goes, including light and heating. The observed brightness does not sum up the entire transformation. This accounting approach helps identify incomplete descriptions: if a proposal announces a useful output, we still need to ask what input it requires and what other outputs occur.
